Who we're looking for

Schroders Capital is the private assets team at Schroders and was launched with its own branding on June 7, 2021. The objective being to ensure that the private assets division of Schroders gets recognized both internally and externally for its range of diversified teams and capabilities across asset classes and sectors in both developed and emerging markets (i.e. real estate, infrastructure, PE, renewable energy, natural capital, ILS, securitised products, private debt and impact investing). It is the ambition of Schroders Group to further grow its private asset business and to make sustainability and impact (S&I) a defining characteristic of Schroders Capital.

The Schroders Capital (SC) Sustainability and Impact (S&I) team supports all SC teams and their respective sustainability experts with additional sustainability and impact expertise.

The Climate Specialist will be responsible for driving an exciting agenda to deliver on a number of climate commitments from all our private assets business. This role will be key for the research, development and implementation of all aspects related to climate analysis, methodology, investment portfolio, product offering as well as investment solutions at Schroders Capital.

The climate specialist will be leading how climate ambition, strategy and reporting will become a key component of the ESG and S&I sustainability framework at Schroders Capital level. The focus of this position is to contribute to building increased transparency of greenhouse gas emissions linked to private assets investments and to identify and establish innovative business models to reduce overall emissions at portfolio level.

The role requires technical knowledge on the climate topic and a deep understanding of greenhouse gas footprint data and methodologies in private markets, including leading practices in the measurement of scope 3 GHG emissions reductions across different asset classes and private assets sectors.

The successful candidate will be the first fully dedicated climate practitioner within the private assets S&I team and will work closely with both the central SC S&I team and sector-specific sustainability experts. He/she will be expected to carry out the hands-on-analysis (KPIs, data collection, and reporting, among others) at SC level as well as contributing towards the climate action, commitments and implementation at Schroders Group level.

The hired individual will sit in the S&I team and have a reporting line into the Head of Sustainability & Impact at Schroders Capital. He/she will work closely with investment professionals and sustainability experts from the different private asset teams, investment solutions team, and with the Head of Strategy for Private Assets.

The base

We moved into our new HQ in the City of London in 2018. We're close to our clients, in the heart of the UK's financial centre. And we have everything we need to work flexibly.

What you'll do

• Develop the SC strategy in climate finance as well as SC's contribution to Schroders Group climate initiatives, commitments and action plans.
• Develop a climate solutions framework with the objective of reducing carbon emissions and contributing to environmental solutions in private markets (e.g. climate transition, mitigation, and conservation).
• Lead on the SBTi reporting for SC. The first SBTi reporting at Group level was done end 2021 and several private asset business lines are to be added as of 2022 (e.g. real estate, private equity, infrastructure, impact investing, etc.).
• Lead on representing SC in TCFD implementation and reporting. Contribute to the Schroers initiative at Group level as well as support specific private assets teams in their TCFD reporting.
• Develop carbon measurement and reporting methodology and lead its implementation across private assets with the objective to provide tailored data and reporting for specific investment solutions across private assets for climate mandates.
• Support the development of a SC offering in climate finance with a focus on articulating solutions across mitigation, adaptation and natural capital.
• Guide S&I team members on ongoing and future initiatives on natural capital and biodiversity with the objective to ensure best practice (e.g. sustainable forestry) is followed.
• Develop an analysis of a climate/ESG dataset across different private assets classes and propose appropriate KPIs for carbon measurement and reporting in line with the frameworks followed at Schroders Group level when applicable.
• Using your analytical and data skills you will help establish what the climate KPIs for private assets should be as well as propose measurement tools.
• Work in close collaboration with S&I and sustainability experts to productionise our climate reporting capabilities.
• Identify and source internal and external datasets that can be used to support the private assets carbon measurement and reporting capabilities.
• Build effective relationships with sustainability and investment professionals across sectors, regions and asset classes which enable an ongoing dialogue that will shape all climate-related aspects of SC's S&I framework.
• Present our work to internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities will include

• The development of a Schroders Capital climate strategy to implement climate risk and resilience programme for private assets portfolios as an integral element of Schroders Capital's Sustainability and Impact programme.
• Recognising regulation and industry frameworks, ensuring compliance and contributing to industry discussion.
• Working with Schroders Capital sustainability resources and the investment team to ensure climate risk and resilience is managed within the investment process to include setting and inputting to guidance documents, asset analysis and reviews, as part of net zero ambitions and within investment and risk monitoring and reporting.
• Supporting the communication of the climate aspect of the sustainability programme generally, specific to private assets funds both within the organisation and externally to clients and other stakeholders.
• Supporting internal thought leadership on climate, carbon and sustainability and impact related investment themes.
• Supporting industry engagement through representation at industry groups and sustainability committees, attending conferences and contributing to industry initiatives.

The knowledge, experience and qualifications you need

• A passion for, and interest in, sustainability issues and trends with a particular focus on climate investments.
• Extensive knowledge and previous professional and analytical experience in climate solutions with a specific focus on private assets.
• Experience with implementation of SBTi and TCFD for private assets. Knowledge in real estate, infrastructure, natural capital and PE being a clear advantage.
• Previous professional work experience in climate finance.
• Strong data handling and analysis skills.
• Experience working within private assets, including data collection and analysis across sectors and asset classes with a focus on key climate data.
• Experience working with difficult or sparse datasets, including evidence of aggregating key performance indicators for both tracking, measuring and reporting carbon measurement in private assets.
• Ability to navigate and understand the rapidly evolving climate, carbon and wider sustainability landscape for private assets investments.
• University degree in environmental sciences, earth science, and climatology or in a related field.
• Postgraduate degree in environmental and climate finance.
• Experience and/or exposure to asset management.
• Evidence of independent thought leadership in the climate space.
• Ability to take ownership and act proactively for projects and tasks.
