WELLINGTON MANAGEMENT

Wellington Management offers comprehensive investment management capabilities that span nearly all segments of the global capital markets. Our investment solutions, tailored to the unique return and risk objectives of institutional clients in more than 60 countries, draw on a robust body of proprietary research and a collaborative culture that encourages independent thought and healthy debate. As a private partnership, we believe our ownership structure fosters a long-term view that aligns our perspectives with those of our clients.

We are transitioning to a hybrid work environment where both remote work and the office play a critical role. Our vision is a future where all employees are empowered to work flexibly to drive the best outcomes for our clients. Flexible work is a mindset and a core value. Our employees are encouraged to work remotely two days a week as a standard practice and will have flexibility in terms of working hours.
International Tax
The International Tax team is a small group of tax lawyers and accountants based in London and Boston whose work touches every aspect of Wellington Management's business globally.

The team advises the firm and the firm's sponsored funds on international (non-US) tax issues arising on international investments (equity, fixed income and alternatives), on structuring the funds that make such investments and on tax issues that may affect our clients. The team is also involved in advising on international tax in relation to separate account client issues, including negotiation of Investment Management Agreements, and advising Wellington Management Group LLP and its affiliates in relation to the group structure, taxation of profits globally and employee benefit plans. If there is a non-US tax element to any part of our business, the International Tax team is involved.

The successful candidate will see all aspects of Wellington Management's business and will have the opportunity to work in a global team and advise on broad international tax issues. They will take ownership of projects and have many opportunities to expand and grow.

The Position
We are seeking to recruit a tax professional to join the International Tax team in London. The ideal candidate should have between 5 and 8 years of practical multijurisdictional tax consulting experience gained at a top tier accounting or law firm and familiarity with international fund structures. Experience within the financial services industry would be beneficial.

The work is broad-based international tax work, and the candidate need not have expertise in all the areas outlined below - the capacity to ask questions and learn quickly is equally, if not more, important.

This is a broad role which will include, but may not be limited to:
  • Monitoring changes in global tax laws and assisting in the analysis of their application to Wellington's sponsored products, clients and Wellington itself;
  • Tax analysis and structuring for new office openings, new markets and new products;
  • Keeping the business up to date with, and establishing internal policies and projects to deal with changing tax legislation (e.g. BEPS, anti-avoidance, etc.);
  • Researching specific technical tax issues, instructing local and overseas advisers where appropriate, and monitoring and testing the output;
  • Participating in international tax authority discussions and enquiries;
  • Oversight and support for outsourced work, for example, FIN 48 (ASC 740) tax provisioning for all investments (c.150 jurisdictions) across Wellington's sponsored funds;
  • Advising on investment manager exemptions internationally and developing protocols to ensure global compliance;
  • Assisting on other permanent establishment issues arising from a globally mobile workforce;
  • General international tax advice, including double tax treaty analysis for sponsored funds and separate account clients, spotting non-US tax issues, withholding taxes, etc;
  • Review of investment management agreements and other legal documentation with fund investors and separate account clients for tax-specific requirements;
  • Responding to the tax elements of requests for information / requests for proposals from current and prospective clients;
  • Reviewing tax language in prospectuses for new funds, and updating the language for existing funds;
  • Deal/investment related work as it relates to non-US taxes, including obtaining legal advice globally, and review of share purchase agreements, liaising with custodians and local tax agents;
  • Analysis of the application of financial transaction taxes (FTTs), Stamp Duties, Value Added Tax (VAT), and Goods and Services Tax (GST) to products, the fund and the firm;
  • General support of the International Tax team as required.
Skills
We work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and the candidate will need to be self-motivated and extremely organized and efficient in their approach to work. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively articulate complex tax concepts to others around the business. We greatly value our culture of collaboration within teams and across departments and offices, so strong people skills and the ability to build trust and good working relationships is essential.

Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications? That's ok. If you believe that you could excel in this role, we encourage you to apply and welcome a chance to review your background. We are dedicated to building and maintaining a diversified workforce and considering a broad array of candidates with a variety of skill, workplace experiences, and backgrounds.
