Senior European Rates Strategist

We are working with a leading global bank that is looking to hire an experienced Rates Strategist (VP or Director Level) to be part of their successful European G10 Rates Strategy team (focus would be on European Rates/EGBs Ex-UK).

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience covering European Rates (essential), as well as a strong macro background and a thorough understanding of how to analyse the fundamentals of government bonds. Strong experience of derivatives (Swaptions/Rates Vol etc), as well as long-end rates would be a major plus.

In this role, the focus will be on trade idea generation (very important) and producing market-leading research, both for clients (HFs, Real Money), as well as the sales & trading desk.

In terms of trade idea generation, the focus will be on RV Trades (cash for cash), asset swap trades, Rates Vol/Swaptions, Long-End Rates, directional calls, as well as a range of other types of trades (mostly tactical + some longer-term). If a candidate has experience with Futures (how to implement a trade) or Roll Analysis, this would also be a plus, however is not required.

There will also be a heavy client-facing element to this role, so it is important that the selected candidate has strong client-facing experience, preferably at another top bank (or at least with previous sell-side experience if currently working on the buy-side).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Generating value-added trade ideas, market views and economic analysis that should be useful for the trading desks, as well as clients of the bank
  • Extensive analysis of G10 interest rate markets (European Rates Especially) to provide clients and internal teams with market views/insights and actionable trade recommendations via face-to-face meetings and written publications
  • Writing and marketing (internally and externally) written reports on Rates Strategy views, with a particular focus on European Rates/European Rates Derivatives
  • Leveraging themes, data models/analysis and trade ideas created by strategist colleagues globally.
  • Helping drive cross-asset topical ad hoc flagship research pieces.
  • Drive the key Global Markets forecasts and actively integrate the views across research - economics, rates credit, FX and local markets.
  • Working in conjunction with Sales & Trading to generate trade ideas
  • Helping the trading desk with risk positioning
  • Drive the integration of Strategy & Research products across the different regions globally
  • Acting as a spokesperson for the global strategy team views, ideas and insights regarding global markets

Qualifications
  • 5-10+ years' experience
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of government bonds, with particular expertise in the EGB space (and broader G10 Rates Experience)
  • Strong idea generation experience (RV Trades etc)
  • Extensive experience and familiarity with rates research products.
  • Existing experience in managing risk-on macro trades
  • A good understanding of key macro & thematic drivers across asset classes
  • Strong knowledge of economics and statistics
  • Understanding of Futures or Roll Analysis would be a plus, however not required
  • Strong technical/quantitative background
  • A team-player

Key success factors in first 12 months:
  • Having had a lot of client interaction and being someone that is very liked and known amongst clients (external and internal). Being someone that clients begin coming to directly when they want to discuss trade ideas or views around European Rates/European Rates Derivatives
  • This person will have published several trades that have been working well and that have been profitable
  • Being liked by the trading desk and being seen as someone that is adding a lot of value
  • Strong internal brand, being known across the business and liked by colleagues on multiple teams

What will be the main output/responsibilities of this person:
  • Focus is on publishing trade ideas and thematic pieces when relevant (there are no regular publications this person would need to be a part of)
  • Sometimes a trade or piece will be written by the individual and sometimes there will be a collaboration with other teams (such as quant macro team or EM etc).
  • The piece will get published and then this will be shared with sales to be put forward to clients.
  • Ideas are pushed to external clients but also to internal clients
