This is a new role within the Investment Services and Technology department ("InvesTech"). The role was created to drive advancement and consistent application of risk management policies and practices in partnership with each InvesTech functional team. The Director of InvesTech Risk & Controls will work across InvesTech Americas, Europe and Asia, helping them implement new risk management practices and policies as part of the Enterprise Risk Management Program ("ERMP") and ensure that project priorities reflect the department's top risk mitigation needs.

The person will advise and challenge first line management on risk identification and monitoring techniques, risk aware decision making, controls design and review, and the development of risk mitigation priorities and mitigation strategies. They will support the implementation of the firm's risk management standards across InvesTech and work to ensure the function's risk management efforts align with industry and regulatory expectations. This is a hands-on role in terms of understanding technical operational processing, performing risk & controls analysis, and working with data; the Director is expected to perform much of their work using the firm's new Governance Risk Compliance system ("GRC") and will also continually work to ensure the validity of GRC data and enhance the risk platform itself, to better meet the evolving needs and product innovation of our clients and investors.

The role requires a strong knowledge of the investment process and operational risk management best practices. S/he should stay apprised of the firm's product trends, new instruments being introduced into portfolios, regulatory developments and operational risk trends at the firm in order to communicate about the resulting potential risks to the accountable owners and first line managers across InvesTech. The successful candidate will bring technical skill and knowledge, be adept at building collaborative working relationships with InvesTech professionals and all levels of management to create a shared vision of the benefits of a more risk-aware processing environment.


Specific responsibilities for this position include:
  • Establish, and work with management on the adoption and advancement of the InvesTech Risk Policy and risk best practices
  • Identifying risk leads across each function to work in conjunction with the "Director" to ensure our risk framework is being examined and maintained
  • Create and maintain electronic and potentially in-person forums for education of department personnel on risk and control policies, best practices and resulting risk mitigation priorities
  • Provide process-specific education, guidance, and challenge on control design in partnership with ERM
  • Create/coordinate creation of a risk dashboard, dissemination to stake holders and lead related discussions
  • This person will lead the InvesTech Risk Working Group. This indicates a level of seniority and access to the department leadership team that supports the candidate's drive toward deliverables.
  • Provide regular updates to InvesTech Leadership Team, and next layer of team leaders on risk themes & trends, and emerging risks for their areas of oversight
  • Oversee GRC data integrity and completeness
  • Coordinate risk and risk mitigation program (including periodic review of controls) with risk owners
  • Liaise with the Enterprise Risk Management ('ERM') team on their initiatives. In addition, ERM will continue to maintain direct relationships with individuals within InvesTech.
  • Facilitate risk focused discussion on InvesTech processes (using input collected as part of ERMP, Incident Review, and Key Risk Indicators), actively challenge or facilitate challenge specific impact/ likelihood/ risk mitigation plans with help of subject matter experts.
  • Coordinate periodic Risk Assessments (operational and regulatory risks), in collaboration with ERM
  • Prepare reporting and documentation to support risk management and governance forums
The successful candidate will be a risk management professional with a minimum of 10 years of experience within the investment management industry (can include consulting, independent audit, insurance, or investment management service provider experience) and direct experience with Enterprise Risk Management frameworks, controls design and monitoring of risks in a technology and data focused operational platform.

Additional qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Exceptional communication skills, inquisitive mindset, and high attention to detail
  • Strong technical capabilities with the creative use of data mining tools and techniques used for presenting and analyzing risk reporting (knowledge of ServiceNow, GRC a plus)
  • Experience with identifying and mitigating global operational risks (including controls improvements) within the investment management industry
  • Demonstrated collaboration and advisory capabilities
  • Participation in diverse working groups and project teams
  • Direct operational first line experience and/or Consulting/advisory experience preferred
