About this role

About the BlackRock London Returners Programme

The Returners programme is designed to encourage and support a return to full-time work for up to ten experienced candidates through a six-month paid Returnship starting in September 2022.

We are seeking experienced individuals who are client orientated and passionate about performance, who display collaborative and innovative mindsets, and bring an eclectic set of proficiencies to the workplace; prioritisation, analytical and organisational skills amongst others.

BlackRock is looking for candidates with prior experience in Investment Management or broader Financial Services, who have had a career break outside of Industry of at least two years (with no upper limit). You must have the right to work in the UK to apply for the programme.

How will BlackRock support your return to work?

ETF & Index Investment Business

We have a number of openings in our iShares Exchange Traded Funds & Index Investment business (EII). EII is the division of BlackRock focussed on index investing, and roles range from portfolio management of index funds to roles that help support and build the index division. In particular we are looking for candidates in the following key business areas:

  • Portfolio Engineering
  • Product Engineering
  • Business Management


Portfolio Engineering:

This role involves portfolio management of our institutional, mutual and ETF index funds. EMEA EII manages approximately $900 bn in assets, ranging from standard index funds such as FTSE 100 to complex index strategies based on factors, themes, synthetic products, hedged products, multi-asset products, etc. This is a rapidly growing division of EII, with unlimited opportunities for the right candidate

Key skills:
  • Experience of portfolio management
  • Experience of index construction
  • CFA qualification is a bonus
  • Team driven
  • Strong quantitative skills, attention to detail, process-oriented, flexible as at certain key rebalance dates hours can be long
  • Understanding of sustainable investing would be beneficial


Product Engineering :

This is the division where we look at the range of our products - from researching and launching new products, investigating and delivering new operating models for funds that bring new challenges, or looking at the quality of the existing range of products and identifying and finding solutions to inefficiencies. This is a growth area, with new funds launched every month, new and exciting opportunities being researched all the time, and new opportunities to work closely with index providers and be at the forefront of index modernisation and evolution

  • Experience of project management
  • Product expertise in any product area
  • Experience of fund life-cycle
  • Team skills and ability to lead complex projects and build strong relationships with stakeholders
  • Good written and communication skills
  • Programming skills a bonus


Business Management:

This role lies within the COO function, and is the team that implements and oversees the controls the other teams operate by - this becomes ever more challenging as the EII business continues to grow in terms of scale initiatives and complexity. The team needs to understand regulatory requirements, ensuring we are adhering to existing legal and compliance obligations, and understanding new regulations, the impact on EII and establishing plans to ensure timely implementation.

  • Organised with a strong analytical, data management problem solving mentality
  • Attention to detail
  • Awareness of the life-cycle of a trade and the different stakeholders involved
  • Relationship-building skills and a desire to work collaboratively
  • Data management and analysis skills
  • Programming skills a bonus
