Department overview:

The Group Data Office is Nomura's central data and analytics arm that works closely with the Business and Corporate functions to enable the execution of Nomura's data vision of firm-wide data monetization through responsible governance and impactful data analytics.

Role Purpose:

Drive the implementation and operationalization of Nomura data management framework for its European entities, in line with the Group framework, to improve regulatory reporting processes and accuracy, and enable effective execution of value from data initiatives.


Role Description and Responsibilities:

  • Data Governance SME. Proven experience in rolling out an enterprise data governance framework with a focus on bringing together policies and standards, principles, governance metrics, roles and responsibilities, processes, related tools and data architecture to improve data quality and metadata management for regulatory compliance and transformation benefit
  • Technical advisor and data-driven approach. State-of-the-art expertise in leveraging data and digitization capabilities to drive pre-emptive data risk and controls automation and management for first line and second line of defence data management activities
  • Value creation through data governance. Design and practice authority to ensure governance activities and mechanisms protect value of core data assets for regulatory requirements and business use.
  • Regulatory engagement. Strong understanding of existing and emerging regulatory requirements, and support management in regulatory interactions where applicable
  • Trusted partner. Work with Nomura's data owners, stewards, custodians and consumers in improving consistent adherence with data management requirements to enhance data value; this includes facilitating technical discussions, providing execution support where required, and elevating understanding of data as a strategic business asset.


This role will report to the Global Transformation Head / EMEA Head, Group Data Office.

Qualification and Core Skills Requirements:
  • Relevant experience in Financial Services and other adjacent Consumer centric business; likely to have started career in data consultancy before moving to industry role
  • Deep understanding of relevant laws and regulations in relation to data and financial services firms' obligations; includes managing and co-ordination regulatory engagement on data matters such as BCBS239 compliance and material outsourcing requirements (Cloud)
  • Deep understanding of data governance frameworks, policies and guidelines, encompassing data standards, metadata management, data quality, data stewardship, and data protection
  • Deep understanding of data management technologies (data catalogue, data quality management), enterprise and Cloud technologies and associated internal governance and regulatory requirements
  • Familiar with core business functions and associated data roles and responsibilities (owner, steward, custodian, consumer) to design and steer compliance with data governance requirements
  • Familiar with data-driven approach and use of analytics for risk management and controls monitoring for data management framework compliance and enhancements
  • Be able to connect and manage relationship with C-Suite to drive data framework compliance and plan change management processes wherever necessary.
  • Understand and utilize design thinking in executing projects.
  • Lead stakeholders in their data governance activities
  • Train and mentor teams and internal business units and stakeholders in data management framework requirements, improvements and operationalization
  • Understand agile ways of working, and able to manage and deliver multiple projects effectively. Can plan, requirements and dependencies; manage complex analysis and enable necessary reporting.
  • Ability to make decisions independently and in line with corporate philosophy, professional ethics, compliance, risk management and Nomura code of conduct.
  • Excellent communication (verbal, written, listening), inter-personal and influencing skills, with the ability to bridge SMEs and business through user-friendly language
  • Able to understand and integrate cultural differences and work effectively with a multi-cultural, multi-disciplined, globally dispersed team
  • Flexibility to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity and rapid change
