The Opportunity:
  • Newly created opportunity working within a very progressive, innovative and market leading Pension Fund Manager
  • As one of the largest private pension scheme managers in the UK (and through recent changes to their FCA permissions is looking to take on significant additional client monies), the complexity and variety of the asset classes managed are huge including public equities and fixed income, real assets, complex derivatives (LDI / smart beta) etc.
  • Following an internal restructuring of a number of front office / investment support business and Operations areas it has been decided to create this new role leading the Data Management team (of 2)
  • Whilst the scheme is one of the largest in the UK, the London office is boutique and employs around 80 staff who work very closely together, thereby offering all staff the opportunity to interact closely with stakeholders at all levels of seniority and across all areas of investment and support
  • Responsibilities include the oversight and day to day management of the Data Management team to ensure the appropriate Input, maintenance, and validation of a huge variety of investment and market data across my client's strategic data systems
  • The role will have a BaU element of circa 30 - 40%, with a heavy weighting towards taking a lead in strategic project work and the delivery of a wide range of business wide initiatives where "data" is key
  • BaU activities (for which you will be responsible for defining / streamlining / documenting) will include being the Product Owner for the investment data warehouse (SQL Server), the management of all data in my client's Portfolio Management and Order Management Systems (FIS Front Arena)
  • Through your commercial acumen you will be required to create periodic audit reports of data usage, with the goal to minimise costs, along with managing day to day relationships with a wide range of service providers and vendors ensuring robust levels of service / governance / controls
  • Ensure data delivery from master data sets to downstream systems is of suitable quality and provided in a timely manner to support all BAU processes
  • Be the first port of call for all queries on data from the business and act as escalation for team members in the resolution of queries from internal clients and external vendors, identifying risks and impacts of data errors and implementation of key controls
  • Ensuring that any changes to processes are approved and communicated along with the creation and maintenance of data dictionaries and architecture guides to ensure that use of data across the entire business is understood
  • Provision of MIS reporting to be shared with senior management and the wider company
  • Take ownership for the delivery of the team's BAU and Strategic change agenda, assisting with testing changes to systems and/or business processes as part of continuous improvement work


Your Experience:
  • You will have proven experience as a data manager with Financial Services/Professional Services environment
  • Possess a strong and relevant record of academic achievement within ideally a numerate or Finance focused discipline
  • Have previous leadership / Team management experience
  • Possession of exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ideally knowledge of a wide range of major asset classes, including equity, fixed income, inflation, derivatives, and their data characteristics, including private market assets such as P/E and funds of funds
  • Experience in managing an investments data warehouse across holdings, security, and account reference data with various data sets, i.e., IBOR and ABOR
  • Previous experience with OTC derivatives and bond trading systems preferred (e.g. FIS Front Arena (desirable)) along with experience using and developing data management mastering systems for example Markit EDM
  • Experience with Bloomberg Data Services and the Bloomberg Terminal along with familiarity around cloud storage/data lake technologies a plus (Azure Databricks)
  • Demonstrate the ability to balance the BAU and the resolution of escalated matters, along with leading / delivering process improvements in order to create efficiencies
  • Detailed knowledge of data vendors and experience of setting up new data sources and managing incumbent arrangements, especially ESG and credit ratings
  • Possess an analytical mind set with problem-solving skills and the ability to deliver against tight deadlines
  • Working knowledge of Python, Java, JavaScript, or other programming language would be a plus
  • Familiarity of Power BI or other data analysis tools preferred
  • Strong MS Excel skills
