Who we're looking for

We're looking for innovative interns to join our Real Estate business on our 2023 Summer Internship Programme.

About Schroders

Schroders is a global investment manager which helps institutions, intermediaries and individuals around the world invest money to meet their goals, fulfil their ambitions, and prepare for the future.

Our purpose is to provide excellent investment performance to our clients through active management. By serving clients, we serve wider society. Channelling capital into sustainable and durable businesses accelerates positive change in the world. Funding the future is a privilege: we use it wisely and responsibly.

We employ over 5700 talented people worldwide operating in 37 different locations across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, close to the markets in which we invest and close to our clients.

Schroders has developed under stable ownership for over 200 years and long-term thinking governs our approach to investing, building client relationships and growing our business.

The base

We moved into our new HQ in the City of London in 2018. We're close to our clients, in the heart of the UK's financial centre and we have everything we need to work flexibly.

The department

Our Real Estate department is an integral part of Schroders Capital, the private market investment division of Schroders, and constitutes an important focus of the Group's strategy for expansion.

Schroders Capital is one of Europe's largest real estate managers with deep real estate expertise on the ground across real estate sectors. Investment strategies are offered in a broad range of open and closed ended funds, listed REITS, specialist funds, joint ventures, separate accounts and real estate debt.

The Real Estate team is highly experienced in real estate fund management, research, acquisitions, asset management and strategy and is comprised of over 200 people operating from offices across the UK, Continental Europe, Asia and North America.

Our investment philosophy is centred on consistent themes including investing in strong fundamentals, actively managing portfolios and delivering positive environmental and social impact. We adopt a research-driven and market-focused investment approach. Our dedicated Real Estate Research team identifies those sectors, cities and real estate characteristics expected to outperform, ensuring portfolios can benefit from structural change.

The programme

Our 2023 Summer Internship Programme runs for 10 weeks starting on Monday 12 June 2023 and ending on Friday 18 August 2023. This Programme will provide you with a unique introduction into the investment management industry and how the Real Estate department operates within it.

You'll be given introductory training with the internship intake across the firm and more specific training within the Real Estate team, as well as opportunities to network with people across the business. During your internship you will be assigned to the Real Estate team where you will have the opportunity to shadow senior executives and provide broad real estate exposure across investment, asset management, research, sustainability, product and distribution.

Some of your tasks may include:

• Examine and execute new acquisition opportunities for Schroder Real Estate funds, potentially including direct and direct assets, debt and corporate. This includes researching investment opportunities, conducting valuation analysis, and helping create reports for the Investment Committee.
• Support in the management of existing portfolio assets, for example repositioning assets and driving the letting of vacant space, or improving the environmental performance of the assets with targeted expenditure. This requires participating in onsite meetings with service providers including agents, architects, building managers and contractors.
• Supporting our dedicated Real Estate Sustainability and Positive Impact team in their analysis of portfolio performance against our ESG and net zero objectives and delivery of specific portfolio objectives.
• Work with the product and distribution teams to launch new products, joint ventures and specialist strategies to grow the business. This involves research of new investment themes, supporting the structuring of new products and the creation of client presentations.

What you'll be like

• Genuine and demonstrable passion and interest in real estate.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Innovative and analytical - you're happy to think outside the box and look for a fresh perspective.
• Happy to get involved in variety of tasks and projects, potentially including working across the Schroder Real Estate office network.
• Good work ethic and commitment to the role, with an ability to perform under pressure.
• A growth mindset: we understand you may make mistakes, and when you do, we are looking for you to learn from these.

The knowledge, skills and qualifications we're looking for

• An honours degree or equivalent - real estate related undergraduate preferred but not required.
• A demonstrable interest in Real Estate is important.
• Penultimate year of study or in final year of study but planning to continue further studies after the end of the Internship
