The Role: Associate Director, EMEA Corporate Ratings (Commodities) - London

The Team:
You will be part of the Commodities team in EMEA, and your main analytical focus will be the primary credit coverage of leading mining, metals, and oil field services companies, but also some oil & gas producers. The commodities team is made of approx. 12 analysts, spread across all Europe, but the sector is global. Therefore, you will be part of wider analytical network which will give you a truly global exposure and expertise. The sector is at the confluence of several rapidly evolving dynamics (incl geopolitics and energy transition...), meaning the work pace is fast and you need be able to both understand how the macro and company-specific features interact with each other's. London is the preferred location, some EU jurisdictions where the team has analytical presence (Madrid, Stockholm etc) may be considered.

The Impact:
At S&P Global Ratings, your impact will be very significant and wide-ranging. You will lead analytical meetings with the most senior executives from the companies you will cover, together with the Lead Analyst. You will be responsible for presenting your independent analytical credit opinion and rating recommendation in front of a rating committee and writing and publishing rating actions. In addition to surveillance of the portfolio, you will effectively communicate with market participants about ratings, as well as fundamentals and trends impacting the industry, and represent S&P Global Ratings' analytical views in front of international investors in roundtables and through written reports.

As an Associate Director, you will analyze a portfolio of assigned entities as well as complex situations, data and information, and assess issuer's quarterly and annual operating results against our financial projections. Specifically, in this role, you will:
  • Act as the primary analyst for complex entities in the cyclical commodities sector, present your recommendations in our rating committees, be an active and vocal voting member in our committees, and prepare materials for ratings publication.
  • Lead from start to finish in the analysis of new ratings, including forecasts, capital structure analysis, liquidity, understanding market/country dynamics but also analyzing Environment, Social & Governance factors to the extent they affect credit quality.
  • Write analytical reports, contribute to thought leadership sector pieces and synthesize analysis into well-reasoned and well-supported rating recommendations that demonstrate a strong understanding of financial markets.
  • Lead meetings with the senior management of the companies we rate, accompanied by a Lead Analyst, and deliver high levels of service excellence to all stakeholders operating in the capital markets.
  • Develop and maintain a high team spirit and contribute to a culture of constant learning, coaching and developmental feedback.
What We're Looking For:
  • A Master' degree holder in Business, Economics, Finance, or a related relevant subject.
  • Significant experience in finance, with strong knowledge of corporate credit analysis (previous experience with an investing institution/asset manager, a commercial or investment bank, an audit firm, or a rating agency is preferred) and strong interest in the commodities sector.
  • Solid analytical skills and a very good understanding of financial statements and accounting concepts, including financial modelling, understanding of-or experience with -legal corporate transactions and debt documentation, and excel modelling skills.
  • Ability to be detail-oriented and to maintain accuracy and proficiency with calculations.
  • The candidate must have strong communications skills (including writing skills); analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent time management and the ability to stay organized, meet deadlines, and multi-task; the ability to think independently and critically; and the ability to mentor others.
  • The candidate should be diligent and intellectually curious, interested to work in a rapidly changing environment, a strong work ethic and a drive to succeed.
  • Personal maturity, interpersonal skills, adaptability, and ability to accept and learn from developmental feedback.
