We offer numerous training and career development opportunities including a weekly legal training programme, department mentoring schemes and a people development committee tasked with providing tangible tools to help manage and develop careers. The department also has a number of active and varied committees including the Diversity, Pro Bono, Charity and Social Committees and encourages participation in the Women's, Black and LGBT Firmwide affinity networks.
BUSINESS UNIT AND ROLE OVERVIEW
Private Wealth Management (PWM) provides a comprehensive range of investment services, including discretionary investment management, investment advice, brokerage services and lending to wealthy individuals, family offices and related structures worldwide, across a diversified range of asset classes, including equities, fixed income, structured products, derivatives, hedge funds and other alternative investments. PWM in EMEA focuses primarily on individuals, families and family offices based in the UK, EU, Switzerland, the Middle East and Africa, who invest through a wide variety of investment vehicles including corporates, trusts, partnerships, regulated and unregulated funds, in a broad range of jurisdictions. Currently, PWM in EMEA is supported by lawyers in London, Birmingham, Zurich, Frankfurt and Warsaw, all of whom regularly work closely with colleagues in PWM Legal in the US and Asia.
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, proactive and robust candidate who is interested in a broad, challenging and rewarding role. The role requires the ability to work independently from day one and to manage a diverse and complex workload meeting tight deadlines. Lawyers in our team work closely with a diverse group of clients across the PWM business and thrive on the pressures of delivering consistently high quality advice to a dynamic and constantly evolving business.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Advising on the legal and regulatory framework for the PWM sales and trading and lending businesses.
  • Advising the PWM product specialists on documentation and transactions relating to equity and fixed income securities, derivatives and structured products and/or securities and asset-based lending.
  • Advising on the current regulatory regime in the EU and UK and working with internal and external counsel in other jurisdictions related to the business, as well as providing product-based advice on pre and post insolvency enforceability for derivatives and securities and asset-based lending.
  • Advising Private Wealth Advisors on all aspects of the client relationship, from pitches through to the structuring of accounts, negotiation of account documentation and investment restrictions, support on transaction-specific questions, the margin and risk management process and new products.
  • Advising senior PWM Management on a variety of lending and trading issues, including new initiatives, significant transactions, impact of regulation, material account-related issues and issues relating to the structure of the business.
  • Advising and liaising with PWM compliance professionals on a wide range of lending and trading issues, such as interpretation of regulations, significant transactions, account activity and surveillance.
  • Advising on policy development - introducing new policies in response to new legislation and revising current policies to meet the needs of the business.
  • Liaising with other lawyers in the Goldman Sachs Legal Division globally in relation to specific product or other issues, including derivatives, equity capital markets, employment and litigation.
  • Liaising with external counsel on a broad range of domestic and cross border jurisdictional issues, including licensing and selling restrictions, and enforceability of collateral arrangements.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • We are looking for a lawyer to join our team in London and provide advice to the Private Wealth Management Business and are targeting qualified lawyers in the 3-5 years PQE range, although we would also be willing to consider candidates with a different experience profile.
  • Whilst candidates are not expected to have experience in all of the areas covered within PWM Legal, candidates will need to demonstrate an understanding of certain of the areas described above, in particular, knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework pertaining to one or more of the following:
    • equity and fixed income securities and the operation of capital markets; or
    • derivatives and structured products; or
    • securities and asset based lending.
  • Candidates are expected to have relevant post-qualification experience either with a reputable law firm or as in-house counsel.
  • The candidate should have good English language skills and knowledge of another major European language would be a plus.
