Centrica Energy Marketing & Trading (EM&T) is the trading arm of Centrica. We trade LNG, gas, power, and energy attributes - and connect independent producers, suppliers and corporate off-takers in the wholesale energy markets.

The EM&T Market Risk team is responsible for identifying, evaluating, measuring, and controlling all market risks EM&T has exposure to through its portfolio of physical and contractual assets and trading activities. Its role is to proactively provide actionable insight on specific and portfolio-level risks, both existing and potential, to all stakeholders to ensure EM&T achieves its commercial, financial, and strategic objectives while controlling for potential downside losses with a robust and resilient risk control framework.

The team ensures the business operates in a controlled manner under its risk mandate and established governance frameworks. It also provides an independent and constructive challenge to front-office trading strategies and advice on market risk management strategies and methods for new business ventures and proposals.

Reporting to the Manager of Market Risk (Operations and Analytics), the Market Risk Specialist (Operations and Analytics) will be responsible for supporting the design, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing development of the Market Risk team's suite of systems models and analytical tools.

The role is based out of our London offices (close to Marble Arch) and there will be a requirement for occasional travel to Denmark (Aalborg/Copenhagen).

Role responsibilities and Deliverables:
  • Design, implementation, and maintenance of a suite of databases, systems, tools and models for the measurement, analysis, reporting and control of all EM&T market risks
  • Working with the Head of Market Risk and team to deliver the Market Risk transformation plan
  • Ensure Market Risk operations and processes are optimised, resilient & appropriately documented
  • Ensure Market Risk analytical tools and reporting is standardised
  • Working closely with other Market Risk Managers to ensure all market risks are captured, monitored, and reported by the risk control framework (RCF)
  • Ensure all enhancements to the platform on which the team operates are developed and implemented following best practice
  • Lead Market Risk participation in new business operational implementation and approval processes
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to analysts in developing programming skills
  • Establish effective relationships across the business, including Transaction and Quantitative Risk (TQR), Digital Technology Services (DTS), Quantitative Analytics (QA), Front Office
  • Support Market Risk contribution to delivering EM&T digitisation transformation objectives.


The Person:
  • Extensive experience in Energy Commodity Trading or Banking envioronment
  • Demonstrable record of designing and implementing risk management systems and tools
  • Strong knowledge of physical and financial wholesale energy market fundamentals and traded instruments such as - Power, Gas, Emissions, LNG, Renewables
  • Strong knowledge and experience of working with risk management methods and techniques - Value at Risk, Profit at Risk (PaR), Potential Future Exposure (PFE), Stress Testing, Scenario Analysis, P&L etc.
  • Highly proficient in several of the following - VBA, SQL, R, Matlab, Python, C#, C++ .Net, Alteryx, Blue Prism, Power BI
  • Strong knowledge of and experience of working with ETRM systems - Endur, Alegro, EOS, or proprietary in house
  • Strong knowledge and experience of working with price databases and quantitative analytics libraries
