Job Purpose

An opportunity has arisen for a Management Accountant to join our dynamic and innovative Finance team at BMJ. As the Management Accountant you have responsibility for the financial accounting, financial management and routine financial reporting surrounding the allocated business portfolio. In addition to the monthly management accounts close process and subsequent reporting the role should lead on the quarterly forecasting and the annual budget process for their allocated portfolio area. The role is the lead financial contact and business partner for the business areas that the role supports.

This role works closely with the Head of Business Reporting, Senior Finance Business Partner, senior management and a broad range of other stakeholders.

Key Tasks
  • Develop a strong and in-depth understanding of all areas and products within the allocated product portfolio including international complexities;
  • Preparation and analytical review of relevant product and overhead accounting with reporting to stakeholders;
  • Quarterly forecasting and annual budgeting;
  • Oversee accounting and reporting accuracy of all project funded investments, liaising with the PMO and project owners;
  • Lead regular meetings with stakeholders to discuss variances, challenge and make recommendations to ensure budgets are controlled effectively;
  • Preparation of year end financials and assisting in the audit process, liaise closely with auditors;
  • Invest proactively in cross-team and cross-group working, allowing best practice to be shared and consistency of approach to be improved throughout the wider business;
  • Support in developing enhanced reporting and financial processes aligned with system capability and business needs;
  • Balance Sheet reconciliations (e.g. accruals/prepayments/deferrals);
  • Responsibility for some cross-group accruals, intercompany recharges and analysis;
  • Ad hoc project work and providing support to BMJ Finance team and the business as required, such as assessment of investment opportunities, including supporting business leads in preparing business cases


Knowledge, Experience and Skills
  • Qualified accountant or equivalent with commercial experience;
  • Proven ability to influence and manage multiple stakeholders to achieve common goals;
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of management and financial accounting and reporting with the ability to interpret financial data and draw sensible conclusions;
  • Communication of financial themes to non-finance colleagues;
  • Experienced in using financial systems and excellent Excel skills
