Role Description:

The Lead Product Manager for Alternative Investments is a senior business leader with global responsibility for the alternative investment product line as part of the integrated middle office product umbrella for asset owners.

Northern Trust delivers investment administration, transaction support and investment analytics to our asset owner clients invested in alternative investments such as private equity, private debt or hedge funds.

The product management function supports the full lifecycle management of the product line.

The Lead Product Manager will be responsible for managing the alternative solution set and collaborating with the asset owner business in the development of product strategy and roadmaps that deliver the business objectives.

The Product Lead requires the strategic mindset to provide guidance and judgement to the stakeholders and will be developing perspective and points of view on products and related roadmaps to achieve stated business objectives, including digitalization.

This role will report to the lead product manager for middle office, work in close collaboration with the alternatives Product Executive, and business partners. This role includes an emphasis on oversight and / or direction of execution activities to bring product strategies to life.

Major duties:
  • Responsible for management of product lifecycle and the realization of prescribed product definition, capabilities, or services which include: a. Discovery and Innovation: Derive market insights and formulate product enhancement strategy b. New / Enhancement Product Planning: Concept, feasibility and definition c. New / Enhancement Product Introduction: Coordination with development, oversite of product launch d. Post-Launch Product Management: Performance & lifecycle management
  • Seasoned leader with extensive business experience, deep functional expertise in the area of alternative assets, and a focus on proactive strategic leadership.
  • Define the product vision based on wide ranging inputs from clients, markets and desired commercial outcomes.
  • Ensures development and execution of product roadmaps with 3 - 5 year horizons outlining strategic goals as determined / prioritized in partnership with the Product Executive / Business Stakeholders. Partner with Technology to ensure recommended roadmap is feasible and aligns with corporate / asset servicing technology strategy.
  • Ensures industry and market research is conducted on product / enhancement viability, competitive threats, and understands potential impacts to product strategies.
  • Engage with relevant industry organizations, consultants, competitor organizations, vendors and other relevant third parties.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate fully developed core expertise on industry trends, market segments and competitor services / offerings, and client needs.
  • Works with sales and relationship management teams to support sales efforts.
  • Manages the alignment of business strategy and objectives to product strategy.
  • Assesses the investment needs (capital and expense) through understanding trends, client's needs and roadmap reviews and makes prioritized recommendations to the Product Executive and Business Stakeholders.
  • Experience in having represented organization with thought leadership - participates at industry events, publications, and at client events.
  • Serves as product point of contact for sales teams, communicates new features and their value proposition, oversees RFI, RFPs and due diligence responses for the Product Umbrella.
  • Engages directly with clients to understand expectations.
  • Thinks horizontally across the Alternatives client base to find commonality with clients in private and liquid markets.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Proficient in constructing / overseeing logical and conclusive presentations, distilling complex subject matter into management-ready materials.
  • Proven business leadership skills, with track record of building products and demonstrated understanding of core concepts of product management required. Ability to understand and grow the strategic business vision.
  • Deep understanding of portfolio management workflows particularly associated with Alternative Asset Classes.
  • Proficient in constructing / overseeing logical and conclusive presentations, distilling complex subject matter into management-ready materials.
  • Excellent in building key relationships, influencing and negotiating with clients, partners and leaders across multiple disciplines.
  • Proven experience in product management and / or product commercialization related experience
  • Related industry qualifications preferred
  • Masters or other advanced degree and / or CFA is preferred
  • A College or University degree and relevant proven work experience is required.
