In EMEA, Northern Trust Asset Management serves professional investors offers a wide range of investment management capabilities, across active and passive, equities, fixed income and cash management. This includes quant active, sustainable investing, multi-asset, liquidity focused solutions as well as more traditional index management. Capabilities are available through both pooled funds and segregated accounts, with a focus on designing investment strategies to meet the specific needs of investors. Role/ Department:

Hands on Senior Controls role with responsibility for leading the day to day management of the local Control function supporting business growth whilst also driving robust oversight of the global end to end system of controls through active engagement, thematic reviews, risk analysis and control deep dives to continuously manage and reduce NTAM's residual risk profile. Reporting directly to the Chief Operations Officer in the region, this will be a Certified role under the UK Senior Managers Regime (SMCR).

The key responsibilities of the role include:
  • Managing a local team of control and resiliency consultants focused on achieving operational excellence within the 1st line Controls function of a fast growing division of a Global Asset Manager
  • Work within a global control function established to undertake a broad range of control activities including but not limited to RCSA, Operational Resiliency, incident management, control testing, audit remediation
  • Lead the implementation of a comprehensive Risk Control and Self-Assessment ('RCSA') program within the EMEA Region including designing effective controls in partnership with control counterparts in other locations and with local business executives
  • Trusted advisor and SME/advisory support to 1st line on regulatory, resiliency and operational changes including issue management, operational resiliency, business continuity and disaster recovery working with Senior Managers as needed in response to local regulatory needs
  • Focus on owning, maintaining and improving the NTAM EMEA operational resilience frameworks, governance, regulatory deliverables etc, ensuring the ability to safeguard NTAM EMEAs legal entities, clients and assets
  • Responsible for ensuring the continued maturity and understanding of Operational Resilience across the business, leading communications and building training and guidance to all levels
  • Production of MI and monitoring of performance measures, metrics and key performance indicators through an operational resiliency lens
  • Lead the development of local Business Continuity plans, providing insightful information and guidance and also challenging business areas where appropriate
  • Provide guidance and support to vendor/outsourcing owners with regards to ongoing operational resiliency needs and support the review and completion of critical vendor 'deep dives'
  • Lead the Resiliency and Business Continuity testing programme covering internal and external activities
  • Develop, coordinate and execute plausible and realistic Scenario Testing for all Important Business Services: define and maintain the catalogue of 'service but plausible' scenarios
  • Ensure compliance with the NT Corporate Operational Resiliency framework, procedures and guidelines together with all relevant regulatory requirements
  • Work with the Operational Continuity Committee (OCC) Chair and Cosec of the OCC for NTAM EMEA, collating content and ensuring minutes and actions are formally noted
  • Assessment of the control environment with recommendation of best practice and enhancement opportunities.
  • Independent risk based review and testing of controls (design and operating effectiveness)
  • Oversight over change management and adherence to corporate risk /compliance policies
  • Provide guidance and consultation on any risk and control issues, including audit and regulatory issues
  • Coordination of and oversight of internal/external audit and compliance testing as and when needed
  • Ensuring tracking of audit and compliance testing programs from fieldwork, to testing to management response to remediation
  • Production of management information for governance forums as and when required
Knowledge / Skills:
  • Graduate or relevant professional qualification
  • Extensive experience financial services, consulting, operational risk management or audit with a demonstrated track record of operational risk management. Experience in Asset Management is preferred
  • Experienced people manager with a proven track record in making a difference within an organisation, comfortable leading directly or indirectly both local and global teams.
  • Demonstrated success in the strategic development of policies, procedures and assessment of internal controls
  • Demonstrated ability to take industry trends, innovative behaviors, data analytics, and automation to drive a proactive and anticipatory approach to all risk management and control design
Leadership & Organisation
  • Proven track record in operational risk and controls with broad experience gained from within ideally a Global Asset Manager
  • Demonstrable experience to effectively work as a player coach with high personal accountability and ownership for team goals in additional to own objectives
  • Strong multi-tasking skills required to operate effectively within a fast paced, hybrid and highly pressurised global environment often working short deadlines
  • Proven track record in people management, motivating and improving the performance of a team
  • Highly organised, detail oriented and results focused individual with a strong track record in managing teams and self to deliver on multiple initiatives both locally and globally
  • Strong knowledge of Operational and Enterprise Risk Management adept at and with a proven track record of working across multiple areas of businesses and functions
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Risk Managements trends and statistical techniques for operational risk management
  • Experience of working in European regulated environment with a good working knowledge of global regulations
  • Experienced in managing stakeholders including C-Level and Independent Non Executives
Technical & Communication skills
  • In-depth technical knowledge of multiple asset classes, including but not limited to, equities, fixed income, real estate and private equity as well as the investment strategies that employ these asset classes
  • Demonstrates excellent team working skills having worked in highly matrixed Global organisations
  • Solid understanding of regulatory, compliance and legal environment with the Asset Management industry ( from Mifid to EMIR, to CASS to SMCR)
  • Sound operational knowledge of European Client needs in both SMAs and Pooled Funds (UCITS/AIFMD)
  • Outstanding communication and influencing skills, both written and verbal, with demonstrated ability to develop materials and effectively present to key Senior stakeholders and at junior levels
  • Active engagement in industry forums/user groups.
