The role

This role is part of the Enterprise and Operational Risk Management team which has the mandate to coordinate and oversee all risk management and control activities across the whole of USS, including USSIM the wholly owned subsidiary and Investment Manager based in the London office.

The Enterprise and Operational Risk Management team is a 2nd line function. This role reports directly into the USSIM Head of Enterprise and Operational Risk Management.

This role will be focused on supporting the team in the implementation, development and embedding of the Enterprise and Operational Risk Management framework within USSIM. Ad hoc support to the wider USS group may be required.

This role will have a particular focus on investment management and other activities undertaken in the London office, and also support the continued development of the 2nd line assurance framework for USSIM's ESG and Climate risk management with respect to our investments and processes.

Key responsibilities

Delivering Results

• Support the continuing development of the Enterprise & Operational Risk Framework

• Support the development of the risk & control framework standards across USSIM including the development of the 2nd line assurance methodology and plan for ESG and climate risk assurance
• Engage with ad-hoc projects, as necessary to support the Group and USSIM Heads of EORM to develop and embed the framework further within the business
• Proactively engage the business in embedding the EORM framework
• Support the USSIM and Group Heads of EORM in the timely delivery of Committee papers
• Conduct and support thematic reviews as required, including scenario analysis

Managing Relationships

• Support and challenge the USSIM function business risk owners and Risk Champions with the identification, assessment and documentation of their risks and controls

• Collaboration with the USSIM stakeholders to enable a proactive and forward-looking risk management
• Provide guidance to risk and control owners (e.g., process development, report design, documentation, policy implementation, risk register review)
• Network widely with risk professionals to keep up to date with emerging issues and industry best practices
• Actively participate in the Operational Risk Forum and in the triage process for risk events

Managing Processes & Future Focus

• Identify opportunities to enhance current risk processes with a particular focus on simplification and automation

Your experience

• Experience in Operational Risk management and control frameworks
• Experience/background in 2nd line assurance of ESG /Climate risk
• The successful candidate is likely to have worked in a risk function, business control function or audit
• Ability to manage broad range of stakeholders
• Good communication/interpersonal skills required
• Strong Microsoft Office skills including excel, PowerPoint
• Model Risk experience/knowledge would be beneficial
• Knowledge of private and public markets, broad knowledge of investments markets and products
• IMC, CFA, certificates in ESG/climate, or other equivalent/ alternative professional investment qualifications would be beneficial
• Knowledge of PowerBI would be beneficial
